Feature Walls & Fireplace Surrounds

Book-matched porcelain slab feature walls with integrated linear fireplaces, lit niches and floating shelving. This is slab work, not tile work: the veining has to run continuously across the seam, which means the panels are selected as a matched pair and cut to a layout drawn before anything is ordered.

What is included

  • Book-matched slab layout drawn and dry-laid before a single cut is made
  • Large-format porcelain up to 1600 x 3200mm, handled with rail systems and suction frames
  • Continuous veining across seams, mitred returns so no substrate edge shows
  • Integrated linear electric fireplaces, wired and framed into the build
  • Recessed LED niches and floating shelves set into the slab, not surface-mounted
  • Substrate levelled and reinforced before slab goes up, because slabs telegraph every flaw
  • Movement joints designed in where the wall meets ceiling and floor
  • TV mounting and cable routing planned before the wall closes, not drilled after

How the job runs

  1. 1

    Slab selection

We go to the yard with you and pick the actual pair of slabs. Veining is unique per batch, so this cannot be done from a sample board.

  2. 2

    Layout drawing

We draw the wall at full scale and set where the book-match centreline lands, where the fireplace sits and where seams fall.

  3. 3

    Substrate and services

Framing, blocking for the TV and fireplace, electrical rough-in, then a levelled substrate. Slab shows every high spot underneath it.

  4. 4

    Slab installation

Panels go up with rail and suction gear, mitred at returns, seams aligned to the drawing. Then fireplace, lighting and trim.

Feature Walls & Fireplaces questions

What is a book-matched feature wall?

Two slabs cut from the same block are opened like a book, so the veining mirrors across the join and reads as one continuous pattern. It only works if the slabs are bought as a matched pair and the layout is drawn before cutting. It is the difference between a wall that looks designed and a wall that looks tiled.

Porcelain or natural marble for a fireplace wall?

For a wall with a fireplace in it we almost always specify large-format porcelain rather than natural marble. It handles heat cycling without staining or etching, it does not need sealing, and the modern printed slabs reproduce Calacatta Viola and Port Laurent convincingly at a fraction of the cost. Natural stone is the right call for a statement piece with no heat source near it.

Can you build around an existing fireplace?

Usually yes, though it depends on the unit. Linear electric units are straightforward because they are a sealed box with a power feed. Gas units bring venting and clearance-to-combustible requirements that set the minimum build depth, and we confirm those against the manufacturer spec before drawing the layout.

How long does a feature wall take?

Once the slabs are on site, most walls are a week of work. The lead time before that is the variable: slab availability, and whether the fireplace unit is stocked or ordered. We confirm both before giving you a start date.
